All 99: Three generations from Arlington West End

In our latest All 99 feature, we’re delighted to introduce the Sherrell-Goodwin family, a multigenerational household in the heart of Birmingham whose bond is as deep as their shared commitment to learning.

Denise Sherrell, the family’s matriarch and great grandmother to two-year-old Khi, reflects on how participating in Birmingham Talks became part of their family’s routine. “Participating in Birmingham Talks has given my great grandson the opportunity to fall in love with being read to every night,” she shares. “It’s helped all of us be more mindful of the ways we’re interacting with him.”

Khi’s mom, grandmother, and great grandmother all took part in Birmingham Talks program nights in support of two-year-old Khi, a curious, bright-eyed toddler who has developed a deep love for books. His favorite right now? Who Hatches the Egg? by Tish Rabe. According to his great grandmother, Denise, reading has become a cherished family routine.

Even during our photo shoot, Khi’s love for books was front and center. He stayed happily focused on his reading, with just a little help from candy to get him to flash a quick smile at the camera.

At Small Magic, we believe that change starts with everyday conversations and families like the Sherrell-Goodwins remind us just how powerful those conversations can be.

All 99 celebrates the faces of early learning in Birmingham: our city’s children and families. Small Magic is working with a variety of local photographers to capture a portrait of a family with children under 5 in each of the city’s ninety-nine neighborhoods.
