Celebrating Our Small Magic Family: Highlights from the Birmingham Talks Alumni Picnic

The Small Magic community came together on an unseasonably cool June day for our Birmingham Talks Alumni Picnic in “Birmingham’s front lawn,” the beautiful Railroad Park. It was a delightful gathering filled with laughter, play, and learning, as families who have participated in our Birmingham Talks program reunited and celebrated their shared journey fostering rich language environments for their little ones.

A Joyful Reunion
Our picnic saw a wonderful turnout of families, both English- and Spanish-speaking, who have been a part of the Birmingham Talks program. It was heartwarming to see familiar faces, including little ones who have benefited from our programs and their older siblings. The day was brimming with joy as children played with beach balls, hula hoops, and bubbles, while parents reconnected with staff members and fellow participants.

Fun and Learning in One
Outdoor toys weren’t just for play—they were a part of our educational mission. Our team demonstrated to parents how these simple tools could be used to stimulate interactive talk with their children, enhancing their language development in a fun and engaging way. This hands-on approach modeled possibilities for creating rich language environments through everyday activities.

A Community Affair
The picnic also featured a snocone truck that was a hit among the kids and adults alike, providing delicious treats to keep everyone cool and refreshed. The event was made even more special with live coverage from a local Spanish-language radio station, ensuring that the happy moments and vital information reached a broader audience.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Nora Samayoa, Family Engagement Manager at Small Magic, shared her thoughts: “The Birmingham Talks Alumni Picnic is a testament to the power of community and the incredible progress we’ve made together. Seeing the children’s faces light up as they engage in play, and hearing parents share their experiences, reaffirms our commitment to making Birmingham the best place in America to raise a child under five.”
