Storytime: Chapter 2 came alive with magic, joy, and countless surprises. Building on the success of our inaugural event, this year’s theme, “Surprises,” brought together a sold-out crowd in celebration of storytelling, the power of words, and the importance of early literacy for Birmingham’s children.
From the moment guests arrived, the evening was filled with unexpected delights—from a magician performing tricks to whimsical children’s toys used as centerpieces, sparking curiosity and conversation. Guests enjoyed delicious bites from local favorite Zaza and sipped on fine wines from Golden Age Wine and Une Femme, creating the atmosphere for a night of laughter, inspiration, and connection.
This year’s interactive Lift the Flap exhibit offered an insightful look into the power of early learning, featuring stories from local families impacted by Small Magic and thought-provoking questions like, What small idea in your life inspired something bigger? Attendees also explored how small moments—like the words a child hears daily—can shape their future success. Complementing the exhibit was a special book fair for grown-ups, hosted by Thank You Books, showcasing a variety of titles. A particularly exciting feature was the chance to donate for a surprise first-edition, signed copy, adding to the evening’s theme of surprises and discovery.
The heart of the night was, of course, our talented Storytellers. Alabama Poet Laureate Ashley M. Jones, Birmingham City Councilor J.T. Moore, writer and podcaster Erin Hicks Moon, professional storyteller Landon Bryant, and renowned jazz musician José Carr each took the stage, sharing personal stories full of twists, humor, and surprise. Whether it was Erin’s recounting of her awkward first screening of Titanic or Landon’s tales of Wal-Mart high school, the stories kept the audience engaged, entertained, and delighted by the power of words.
We are thrilled to share that we raised over $75,000 this year. These funds will directly support our early literacy programs, helping Birmingham’s youngest children get the start they need for lifelong success. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors, whose contributions are a testament to the community’s belief in the importance of early literacy. Special thanks to Alabama Media Group, Altec, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Brasfield & Gorrie, Burr Forman, Cobbs Allen, Coca-Cola Bottling UNITED, Fortif Law Partners, Kemp Management Solutions, Milo’s Tea Company, PNC Bank, Regions Bank, Stifel, and Vulcan Materials Company. Your generosity is helping Birmingham become the best place in America to raise a child under five.
We also want to thank our local partners for adding the magic to the evening—1504, DrapeScapes, Eclectic Advocate, Golden Age Wine, JollyCakes, Moxi, Thank You Books, Une Femme Wines, and Trattoria Zaza. Each of you played a vital role in creating an unforgettable experience.
As we reflect on Storytime: Chapter 2, we are still buzzing with excitement and gratitude. The stories shared remind us why we do what we do—every word spoken on that stage supports our mission of creating a brighter future for Birmingham’s youngest children. Together, we are making a difference, one story at a time.
For those who couldn’t attend, there will be many more magical moments to come, and we can’t wait to continue the journey with you. Stay tuned for what’s next, and thank you for being part of the magic.
