Announcing the lineup for Storytime: Chapter 3 – Growth

We know one thing for certain: stories are magic. On Thursday, September 18, we’re bringing some serious magic to the stage at the Historic Greyhound Station for Storytime: Chapter 3 – Growth, our annual night of live storytelling for adults who believe in the power of words (and the future of Birmingham).

This year’s theme is Growth, in all the ways we hope to see it take shape. Growth in our neighborhoods. In the future we imagine for our kids. In how we listen to each other, and what we decide to build together. It’s a theme that speaks to Small Magic’s work, planting the seeds of early literacy, but it stretches beyond. The people on our stage this year represent many kinds of growth: personal, professional, creative, civic.

We’re so proud to introduce this year’s lineup of storytellers:

You’ll hear from Lou Lacey, a counselor with four decades of experience helping people move through trauma, including the caregivers she supports every day at Children’s of Alabama.

Samantha Williams, who leads Birmingham Promise and has spent her career creating meaningful opportunities for young people, both here and around the world.

Brad Montague, the creator of Kid President and Becoming Better Grownups, whose work brings a sense of joy and curiosity into grown-up spaces that badly need both.

Representative Danny Garrett, a Trussville native and longtime public servant, whose story reflects what it means to invest in your community over time.

And Allysa “LyssaLou” Singer, a poet, mother, doula, and Small Magic alum who brings power, honesty, and heart to everything she does.

You’ll also enjoy local food from Zaza, wine from Golden Age, a curated book fair from Thank You Books (yes, it’s as nostalgic as it sounds), and interactive exhibits that reflect the growth of Small Magic and the city we serve.

All proceeds support Small Magic early literacy programs, which help children across Birmingham build confidence, joy, and a life of opportunity.
